Biography
Mark Stegeman grew up in Santa Rosa, California. After graduating from Santa Rosa Junior College, he went to Pomona College for his last two years, earning a double major (magna cum laude) in Mathematics and Economics. He earned a Ph.D. in Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has held regular faculty positions at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at Virginia Tech and is currently a tenured associate professor of Economics at the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona.
At Virginia Tech, he won teaching awards while teaching classes of more than 500 students. On a student-run website that ranked teachers according to student ratings, he was ranked #3 in the university.
Mark’s experience in the private sector includes helping to manage his family’s sheet metal fabrication business for several years, before starting his teaching career. His consulting experience includes serving as a lead member of a team of engineers, economists, and financial experts that did project analysis and gave strategic advice to the top management of Hughes Communications.
Mark has attended most meetings of the TUSD Governing Board since 2006 and has served on the Board’s audit committee since its creation in 2007. In 2008 he served on the citizens’ committee that reviewed applications for the new superintendent and made recommendations to the Board.
